THE CONCERT

“Ammy Lin [ay-mee lihn] is a young person who recently won a prize for her performance playing a Chinese instrument called the ‘dizi’ [DEET-zuh]. In this first video, she explains how she got started playing this instrument.”

“Ammy plays a few different types of dizi. In this next short video, she shows us the ‘bangdi’ [BAHNG-dee], one of the kinds of dizi.”

“In this next video, she demonstrates a different kind of dizi, called the ‘qudu’ [choo-dee].”

“Can you compare and contrast the bangdi and qudu? What is something that the two instruments have in common? What is a difference between the two instruments?”

“Next, let’s listen to Ammy play an entire piece on the dizi. Her teacher, Gao Hong, is playing along with her on an instrument called the pipa [pee-pah].”

“In the next video, Ammy will talk a little about the history of playing the dizi and who was encouraged and allowed to play the instrument.”

“Let’s hear Ammy Lin perform one more song on the dizi. Once again, she’s accompanied by her teacher on the pipa. After listening, list one or two things you will remember about the dizi.”

“Thank you for attending today’s virtual concert. We hope you enjoyed listening to and learning from Ammy Lin, and we hope you’ll share what you learned with someone else today.”
